💡 What is Net Metering in Ontario?

Net Metering is a billing arrangement offered by Ontario utility companies that lets you earn electricity bill credits when your solar panels produce more energy than your home uses.

Benefits
  1.  Big Savings: Reduce or eliminate your monthly electricity bill.
  2.  No Batteries Needed: Let the grid act as your virtual battery.
  3.  100% Credit for Energy Sent Back: You receive full-value credits (not partial).
  4.  Clean & Local Energy: Decrease your carbon footprint by generating your own power.
  5.  Long-Term Return on Investment: Over time, you recoup installation costs and save thousands.

How Solar Panels Works

1) Capture Sunlight

Solar panels are made of silicon cells that absorb sunlight. When the sun hits these cells, electrons begin to move—creating a flow of direct current (DC) electricity.

2) Convert the Electricity

Homes use alternating current (AC) electricity, but solar panels produce DC. An inverter converts the solar DC power into usable AC electricity that powers your home.

3) Use the Power

The electricity from your panels flows into your home’s electrical panel and is used to run your lights, appliances, and more—just like traditional power from the grid.

4) Measure Usage & Production

Your utility meter tracks the solar energy you produce versus how much power you draw from the grid. This allows for accurate billing based on what you actually use.

5) Store Excess or Send to the Grid

If your solar system produces more energy than you need, that excess can be stored in a solar battery or sent back to the grid for credits on your electricity bill. This process is part of Ontario’s Net Metering program.
